This event is the first ASSA event and hopefully the first of many to come. As an Over 50s state championship it is historical for Australia because senior age snooker championships are not supported by any other snooker associations in Australia. This is the first of its kind.

A huge thanks to those who are supporting snooker for seniors.

Players in the first round from left to right: Peter McCormick, Cliff Hanson, Ron Shephard, Greg Waters, Jeff Rice, Mark Doyle, Lindsay Rhodes, Andy Hutchinson. I, the TD for this event, arrived at the club at 7:30 am to prepare the tables and Peter McCormick was there already, waiting out front to help. While we were brushing and ironing I learned that Peter's niece is #1 womens billiards player in the world and that her husband is the #2 mens billiards player in the world.

The semis start at 10 am Sunday and will be live streamed. Check our FaceBook page for the links.

19th June 2023-06-19

The 2023 Queensland Over 50s Championship (17-18th June), played at Gympie Snooker Club, was won by Peter Kitchener with James Penny as runner-up. Greg Waters made the high break of 41. James, Greg and Ron Shephard played well to reach the semis, but it was Peter who showed what it takes to be "champion". When presented with the winner's trophy and $650 cash prize, Peter confided that despite being ranked amongst the top players in the state for a couple of decades, that he had never managed to win a state championship before.

The 2023 Queensland Over 50s Championship was the first of a series of senior championships planned by the Australian Senior Snooker Association. This Over 50s is a historic event because never before has a "senior championship" being played in Australia.

Yes, there are "masters" events which they now call "seniors", but they are for players as young as 40 and considering that the top players in the world are either approaching or over 50, 40 is not even close to "senior". In fact the only other championship for "seniors" in the world is the Irish Senior Snooker Championship for players 60 and older.

The Australian Senior Snooker Association thanks the Gympie Snooker Club for making our events possible for this year. We also thank all of those who have contributed by donating, playing and attending this event. Special thanks to Viv Mitchell, Cliff Hanson, Jeff Rice, Mark Doyle, Peter McCormick and Lindsay Rhodes for volunteering as referees.

Special thanks to Tony Kishawi for live streaming the semi-finals and final. The video links to watch the semi-finals and final can be found on the Gympie Snooker Club Facebook page and the ASSA website at https://assa.asn.au

Onward and upward, the next event is for Over 60s to be played 12-13th August at Kybong Hall. We expect more interest in this next event and it is limited to 24 players, so better get your entry in early.

Some say that "juniors are the future of snooker" but that could not be further from the truth because by the time they turn 18 very few continue. Seniors will always be the future of this sport because it is from their efforts alone that this sport survives.

Best regards,
William Kent, ASSA President
