The Queensland Over 70s Snooker Championship for 2023 was history in the making because an Over 70s snooker tournament has never been run before, not anywhere in the world.
An Over 70s was the prime target, and to get there we also ran an Over 50s and Over 60s state championships. Perhaps now that others can see how viable these events are, that other clubs and associations might start doing something for their seniors.
Snooker is a fantastic sport and pastime. It can be played on any day, at any time of the day and regardless of the weather. It can also be played by all ages. In the the two finalist of our Over 70s were both over 80 years old, and living proof that snooker is indeed healthy for both body and mind.
However it wasn't easy getting through this year. Because Senior Snooker can be Australia wide, we proposed our events to the national snooker council only to find that they were unable to fit seniors into an agenda that is adopted from their world body. However they did recommend that our state associations had the flexibility to do something.
But the Queensland snooker association was dead set against senior events. Apparently they are only interested in events that they and their children can benefit from directly. A conflict on interest they claimed, yet it is their conflicts of interest that are in question. Consequently we realised that to do something for seniors, that we should form a group especially for seniors and run by seniors. Hence the Australian Senior Snooker Association (ASSA) was incorporated, and set up in such a way that it can be used as an umbrella for senior events in the other states of Australia.
Now one would think that anyone promoting snooker in these dark times, while everyone is foretelling the death of snooker and complaining about the drying up of the waterholes where we play, that our effort would be welcome. But no so,according to the Queensland Billiards & Snooker Association (QBSA) who have been banging on about how they are the governing body of snooker for Queensland and how dare anyone else do anything without their approval. Well they did have their chance and they weren't interested. Considering that in 2022 more than half of their board members resigned in disgust over various issues, none of which welcome on a sporting board, who would want them involved at all?
