Which is better for a sporting club, Facebook or a Website?
When I look at the various billiards and snooker clubs around, I see a variegated mixture of Facebook sites and dedicated websites. All of the Facebook sites are much the same due to the limitations of Facebook, but they provide free hosting for people who know nothing about managing a website.
On the other hand, a dedicated website has more to offer and without limitation to the features that it can provide.
In terms of management, a Facebook site is very limited. Whereas a dedicated website can be as simple or complex as the site manager dares. For example I see some custom built sites and I see web platforms like WordPress, Drupal and Joomla. Some have used WIX but limitations apply with that one. Most use WordPress and there are many plugins available for easy installation of additional features for membership, donations, newsletter, calendar and so on.
But which is better?
WordPress can look interesting but how does one get traffic? In that respect Facebook may be a good choice because membership can promote itself. Or does it? I think that even with a Facebook site, members need to be invited and all Facebook sites with a decent membership will have been manually seeded from a existing membership list.
But regardless of its format, the website is there to provide a focal point and an information service. How well it does that depends on the website manager. Some sites work well and others do not. On some sites one can find absolutely everything while others have no contact details, event calendar or history of past events and office bearers.
What do you think?

Facebook is very popular and touted to be the way to reach people, but I understand the point made about getting members to join or follow your page.
I use Facebook a lot and rely on it to keep in touch with friends and family and also event news posted in groups. But I do get annoyed with chronic posters that I have to put in a sin bin for 30 days.
I have no idea about how to make a website, but it sounds like it could be more stable than Facebook which can be seen today and then lost tomorrow.

Most websites that I see for cuesports are lacking in organisation, making it difficult to find event details or contact details. But Facebook can only confuse that more. |

Websites managed by a committee or board rarely survive management changes. Each AGM can introduce new management and with it can come design changes or even worse... board members who fancy themselves as web designers because once upon a time they built a website using WordPress, or their teenage son is a self proclaimed IT expert.
Either way the end result is usually a disaster with data and features lost.
The only solution is to have a website professionally built so that management can easily add new pages and update existing data... and then leave its development alone.
However there are some pitfalls when using a CMS like WordPress because updates continually become available to fix the bugs and security flaws in the last update and so on. Unfortunately WordPress and web designers recommend allowing them to automatically update, but that poses a problem with the security of the web site.
Unknown to most, and that also includes modern day website designers using CMS that no longer need coding skills, WordPress is the most commonly targeted platform. Any WP site that has been on the web for more than a few days will be found and attacked by a plethora of hackers and script kiddies trying to corrupt its database or exploit it for spam and virus propagation. The procession is endless and they use automated scripts to probe for weaknesses.
By all means keep a professional web designer on hand, but forget automatic updates to avoid vulnerabilities that the ensuing permissions will entail. |

This site looks nice and it doesn't seem to be WordPress. I like where it is going. |

I don't see Facebook as a long term solution especially when they keep add/removing stuff that we do not need. Sometimes I cannot find my own posts as it seems to be about maximizing ads and inviting more users into their soup. |

Facebook is a joke. One day I logged in only to see no posts but message saying that I needed more friends to see posts. Obviously a brain fart by Facebook because that was changed back by the next day. But they are always doing stuff like that... tweaking to display more ads and more people to view those ads.
We all know where that will go as we have seen it before... too much money and power wanting to control things to their own end. Just look where their "meta" nonsense went... millions down the drain. |

I have always been confounded by the value that is put on IT services like Facebook and Twitter. What are those values based on? I see that Musk bought out Twitter for billions. I don't use Twitter because I think it useless and don't know anyone who does. Another IT company known as Atlassian was last year reported to be the new star on the block and valued at being worth more than what I figured it could turn over in a decade. Apparently they are a software company who develops products for software developers. That might sound like a worm hole but I have never heard of them and none of my friends in Australia has ever heard of them either. The news last week was that they had lost millions. |

Re IT startups and their values...
A lot floated on the stock market can start big from publicity and fake news to attract investors. It is no surprise to me when I see them fall and have been watching the phenomenon for more than 20 years. It usually happens within 2-3 years when their probability and mismanagement arrives at insolvency that can no longer be hidden. By then the principals will have already lined their pockets.
Most of those "entrepreneurs" never intended to provide anything but a means of getting rich for themselves.
Anyway, we are moving away from cuesports... perhaps there should be a section for "Off Topic". |

Re Off Topic...
A good idea, but while moderators can move a whole topic they cannot move individual replies. For the time being anyway.
A new section called "Off Topic" is now available, so if everyone can be careful to use that section for anything not directly related to "cuesport".
Until such time that we can move individual replies, anything off topic will have to be deleted. Sorry but there is no other way for now. |
