Generally, the recommended format is best of 5 frames with finals best of 7 frames, except for round robins that may be 3 frame aggregates for overall point score and seeding. However this only our recommendation and all states are free to vary format as they deem fit.

In Queensland we already have a management team and a venue interested in supporting all of our events. We hope to see senior championships in other states and do realise that we will be watched closely.

Knockout Tournaments

The ASSA website provides drawsheets for our tournaments that state delegates can use to create an initial drawsheet from a seeded player list. The playing times can be added and the scores added during the event to automatically promote winners into the next round. That same drawsheet can be vied by the players and the public from any computer or device, and will remain online as an archive of the event.

Dates Of Play

Our events will usually be run over a weekend, Saturday and Sunday, and some may be one day events if the field is small.

In Queensland we have a home venue at Gympie that is within 2 hours for most players in the state, and contrary to what some have claimed, you are safer travelling though our town, even by public transport, than in the capital city.

Progressive Tournaments

Some clubs do run events as a "progressive" tournament where each round has a "play by" date and the players contact each other to arrange their match at mutual convenience. Last year our own club ran all member only events as "progressive" tournaments because that is what the members voted for. Only it was later realised that most of the players that actually competed preferred to play in a proper tournament with tournament atmosphere. Some players, especially the women, felt intimidated and wished that there were independent referees or at least other people in the club at the time.

But the option of using a "progressive" format may be advantageous in cases where, depending on the draw, that players can arrange to play at a venue closer to them.

If we can play a progressive tournament, can we also opt to play online?

If not, is it within the scope of the ASSA to provide such a web service for its members?

No. Playing pool and snooker online can be interesting and while it does require some skill, that skill is not our focus. However if anyone has a good link for online pool or snooker, please do share it for our members.
